Why So Many Instructors Feel Stuck (Even When They Love Teaching)

If you’re a fitness instructor, group exercise teacher, or even a yoga teacher coming from a gym or studio background, and lately something about teaching just feels… heavier than it used to, I want you to know you’re not alone.
Because honestly, I think a lot of instructors are feeling this right now.
Not necessarily burnt out to the point of quitting.
Not even unhappy all the time.
But stuck.
And I think what makes it confusing is that most instructors can’t fully explain why they feel stuck, because on paper they’re technically doing the thing they once dreamed about.
They’re teaching classes.
Helping people.
Working in fitness.
Doing what they love.
So why does it sometimes feel so mentally heavy?
Why do so many instructors quietly feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or trapped… even when they still love teaching itself?
That’s what I want to talk about today.
Because I genuinely don’t think this is just a motivation problem.
I think for many instructors, it’s actually a systems problem.
And once I realised that for myself, everything started making a lot more sense.

Loving Teaching Doesn’t Mean the Structure Works
I think this is something instructors need to hear more often.
You can absolutely love teaching and still feel frustrated by the way the industry works.
For me personally, I loved the actual experience of teaching.
I loved the music.
The energy in the room.
Helping people feel stronger and calmer and more connected to themselves.
But over time, I started noticing that the structure around teaching felt increasingly restrictive.
Teaching at awkward times just to make enough money.
Feeling tied to certain venues.
Paying ongoing licenses but still not really owning what I taught.
Spending hours planning classes, organising playlists, learning choreography, mentally preparing all week long.
And I remember thinking:
“Why does something I love feel so mentally exhausting all the time?”
I think a lot of instructors quietly ask themselves that question.
Especially after a few years in the industry.
At first, you’re excited to get opportunities.
Then eventually you start noticing the trade-offs.
Most Instructors Don’t Hate Teaching
This is important. Because I actually don’t think most instructors hate teaching.
I think they hate how heavy teaching has started to feel.
The constant planning.
The pressure.
The travelling.
The unpredictability.
The feeling of always needing to do more.
And because the fitness industry normalises hustle so much, instructors often assume this is just part of the job.
That if you’re tired, overwhelmed, or mentally drained, you simply need to work harder or become “better organised”.
But I don’t think that’s true.
I think many instructors are operating inside systems that were never really designed around instructor wellbeing in the first place.
The Industry Often Prioritises Clubs Over Instructors
Now this might sound controversial, but honestly, I think a lot of instructors already feel this deep down.
Many large fitness systems are designed around consistency for clubs and brands, not freedom for instructors.
And I understand why.
Gyms want consistency.
Brands want consistency.
Members expect consistency.
But the downside is that instructors often become the most replaceable part of the system.
You can spend years:
paying licenses
attending trainings
learning formats
covering classes
building experience
…and still feel like you have very little control over:
where you teach
how you teach
your schedule
your income
or how sustainable your workload actually feels
There’s actually research supporting this too.
Studies around fitness professionals working in freelance and gig-based environments show many instructors experience high emotional investment alongside low job control.
And honestly, that combination is exhausting. Because instructors care deeply.
Most instructors are incredibly passionate people.
But passion without autonomy eventually becomes draining.
More Classes Rarely Creates More Freedom
I think this is one of the biggest traps instructors fall into.
When things feel uncertain financially or emotionally, the automatic response is usually:
“I’ll just teach more.”
More classes.
More cover.
More venues.
And for a while, that can work.
But eventually you hit a point where your entire life revolves around maintaining the schedule.
You stop fully switching off mentally.
You’re always:
planning
preparing
learning
travelling
thinking ahead
And the difficult thing is that from the outside, people often assume instructors are living healthy, balanced lifestyles because we work in fitness.
But internally, many instructors feel mentally overloaded.
Not because they’re weak.
Because constantly carrying physical, emotional, and mental demand without enough recovery or autonomy eventually catches up with people.
Feeling Stuck Doesn’t Mean You’re Failing
This is probably the biggest thing I wanted to say today.
Feeling stuck doesn’t necessarily mean:
you’ve chosen the wrong career
you’re lazy
you’ve lost your passion
or you need more motivation
Sometimes it simply means your values are changing.
You want more freedom.
More simplicity.
More ownership over your work.
More sustainability.
More support.
And honestly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.
In fact, I think more instructors are starting to question whether the traditional fitness industry model actually supports the kind of life they want long-term.

My Own Turning Point
For me personally, one of the biggest turning points was realising I didn’t want to spend my career constantly chasing intensity.
I was teaching high-impact classes, feeling physically drained, and at the same time becoming more and more drawn towards mind-body training.
I loved music-led classes.
I loved helping people move in a way that felt powerful but also sustainable.
But I also realised I didn’t want:
years of additional qualifications
restrictive teaching models
endless prep
or a style of teaching that constantly left me physically exhausted
And honestly, that’s a huge part of why I created Zone Fitness FLOW™.
I wanted a simpler, more sustainable way for instructors to teach mind-body classes.
Something that felt:
supportive
structured
music-powered
easy to deliver
and far less mentally overwhelming
Because I genuinely believe instructors deserve better options.
Final Thoughts
If any of this resonates with you, I just want you to know that you’re not alone.
And you probably don’t need to work harder.
You might simply need space to step back and reassess how you’re teaching and what you actually want from your career moving forward.
That’s exactly why I created the free 3-Day Instructor Freedom Reset.
It’s designed specifically for instructors who feel stuck, overwhelmed, mentally overloaded, or unsure about how sustainable their current way of teaching really is.
Not to pressure you into making huge changes overnight.
Just to help you slow things down, clear the noise, and reconnect with what you actually want.
And if this resonated with you, I’d genuinely love to hear your experience in the comments because I think far more instructors feel this way than we realise.
Thanks so much for being here, and I’ll see you in the next one.
