How to Stay on Track When Life Gets Busy

There’s always something waiting to steal your attention – work deadlines, family commitments, social events, or just the general chaos of everyday life. And when things get busy, it’s usually your fitness routine that’s first to go.
You tell yourself you’ll get back on track next week, when things “calm down.” But here’s the truth: life rarely slows down. If you want to stay consistent with your workouts, you need a system that works even when life doesn’t.

When people say they “don’t have time” to train, what they really mean is that exercise isn’t currently a priority. That’s not a criticism – it’s a reality. We all prioritise the things that feel most urgent. The problem is, when fitness always sits at the bottom of the list, you never quite build the consistency you need to see progress.
But staying on track doesn’t mean overhauling your entire schedule. It’s about working with your lifestyle, not against it. The key is to make your fitness plan flexible, realistic, and automatic – something you can stick to without relying on motivation alone.
Here’s how to do it.
1. Reframe how you see time
Most people think they need an hour or more to get a good workout. You don’t. Studies show that even short bursts of exercise – as little as 20 minutes – can improve strength, energy, and mood if done consistently. (NHS Live Well)
The idea that “if I can’t do a full workout, it’s not worth it” is what keeps many people stuck. Instead, focus on what you can do, not what you can’t. A 20-minute home workout is always better than no workout at all.
When you remove the pressure of perfection, you remove the biggest barrier to consistency.
2. Build exercise into your routine
Rather than finding time for exercise, start making time for it. That might sound simple, but it’s one of the most powerful mindset shifts you can make.
Schedule your workouts like appointments you can’t cancel. Put them in your diary at the same time each week – just like a meeting or school run. The less you leave it to chance, the more consistent you’ll be.
If you’re not sure where to start, my Free 14-Day Fitness Kickstart gives you a done-for-you structure with daily workouts that fit around busy schedules. Each session can be done at home or in the gym, with clear guidance so you never have to think about what to do next.
Once you’ve got a plan that fits your routine, consistency becomes automatic.
3. Set small, specific goals
Big goals are inspiring, but they can also feel overwhelming when you’re stretched for time. Instead of saying, “I need to get in shape,” break it down into small, measurable wins:
“I’ll train three times this week.”
“I’ll go for a 20-minute walk every lunch break.”
“I’ll prep my breakfast the night before.”
Each small win builds momentum. And momentum is what keeps you going when motivation fades.
If you’re a goal-driven person, try pairing these actions with visible progress tracking. Use a notebook, app, or even your phone calendar to tick off completed workouts. Seeing your streak build is a powerful psychological reward that reinforces consistency.
4. Focus on identity, not just results
This one is huge. Most people chase outcomes: “I want to lose weight.” “I want to tone up.” But when life gets hectic, those goals can feel distant and discouraging. Instead, shift your focus to who you want to become.
Say to yourself:
“I’m someone who keeps promises to myself.”
“I’m someone who moves my body no matter how busy I am.”
That subtle identity shift changes how you show up. You stop negotiating with yourself and start acting in alignment with your goals.

5. Make your workouts work for you
Not every workout needs to be intense. On busy days, choose something lighter – a 20-minute bodyweight session, yoga flow, or brisk walk. What matters is that you keep the habit alive.
That’s why I design my Zone Fitness programmes to be adaptable. Whether it’s a full session of Zone Fitness PILATES™ or a restorative Zone Fitness FLOW™ class, each format helps you move your body in a way that fits your energy and schedule.
Over time, this flexibility keeps you consistent without burning out.
6. Build in accountability
Even the most disciplined people struggle to stay consistent on their own. That’s why accountability is such a powerful motivator.
You can get accountability from a training partner, a coach, or even a structured programme that checks in on your progress. My Free 14-Day Fitness Kickstart includes daily emails and community support to help you stay on track. You’ll get guidance, encouragement, and a clear plan – no more guessing or procrastinating.
Because when someone’s in your corner, it’s much harder to give up on yourself.
Staying consistent when life gets busy isn’t about having endless time or motivation. It’s about having the right systems in place – simple, flexible routines that fit around your lifestyle, not the other way round.
You deserve to feel energised, confident, and strong – even on your busiest days.
